Colombia travel basics
In this section, we want to share a list of resources we have created to help you understand the Colombia travel basics. Our number one resource to solve the big questions is Impulse Travel’s Colombia Country guide. This is a comprehensive guide that is constantly being updated by our team. It is attached to all the travel proposals we make and our travelers find it very helpful before and after their trip. It contains the following sections:
- Before you go.
- In-county info.
- Cultural considerations.
Here is a list of the most frequent questions we get from our international partners. We’ll provide a brief answer and links to external articles and our own blog posts to go more in-depth.
What is the best time to travel to Colombia?
Colombia is good to visit all year round. That’s because Colombia is located in the tropics and its geography is so extensive that you will find every climate at any point of the year, just depending on where you go. In general, the sunny Caribbean Coast (Cartagena, Santa Marta, Tayrona) coast has more likelihood of rain from March to June, while destinations in the Andes (Bogota, Medellin, Coffee Region) have less likelihood of rain from December to March.
We recommend visiting Colombia during the low seasons to avoid crowds and have better hotel availability, especially in the small boutique hotels we love. The low season is from March to June and September to early December.

Is traveling to Colombia safe?
The simple answer is: YES! Traveling to Colombia is safe. Colombia has had a major comeback to the travel scene after signing the Peace Agreement in 2016.
Safety concerns might be a lingering perception for some travelers. However, Colombia has made significant strides in improving security. The homicide rate has been steadily declining, with a 40% decrease between 2012 and 2020 [source: InSight Crime]. The Colombian government is actively investing in tourism police units and security measures in popular tourist destinations.
As Impulse, we have operated trips for over 30,000 international travelers, and we have not had any major safety incidents. We are well connected with the communities we work with, and we have clear and early warnings if the public order situation at any given community takes any action. We have also written a blog post for our travelers with our key safety tips to stay out of harm’s way.
